Watford MP Claire Ward has urged pensioners to act now and claim extra cash to help pay for spiralling heating bills before the winter begins to bite.

Ms Ward has urged older people in her constituency to apply for Winter Fuel Payments as quickly as possible to ensure they do not miss out on a financial boost during the colder months.

The town’s MP said: "I don't want anyone to miss out on the help they are entitled to.

“If you haven't received a Winter Fuel Payment before - and are not receiving state pension or another social security benefit - you need to apply now.“ She said those claiming housing benefit, council tax benefit and child benefit can still apply.

Ms Ward added: "I know things are tough at the moment and people are worried about energy bills. That's why I have supported the Government's plans for extra help for the elderly and those on benefits this year.

"For households including someone aged between 60 and 79 there will be an extra £50 this year - bringing the total up to £250.

“Households with someone aged 80 or over will receive an extra £100 this year - boosting their payment to a total of £400.

The MP said that if people applied for the fuel allowance by September 19 they should receive their payment before Christmas.

Shame for the old people they don't have the gold plated pension that Ward voted for herself.

Not to mention her second home...payed for by us.Why are MPs not made to hand their second homes back to the treasury when they lose their seat or retire?its their SECOND home and no longer required when they stop working. Why also do the government not build a residence for MPs so they can all be under one roof and all we'd have to pay is the running costs,a bit like a sh1tbags hotel. All MPs are out of touch with reality because once they've had their nose in the trough,it's hard to get it out....

And where is her second home? Central London by the HoC or somewhere more glamorous or remunerative?

It's probably no nearer Watford than her first home.
