Pupils at an Abbots Langley community special school have received an £18,000 adventure play area from a rugby charity.

Wooden Spoon Charity, which supports mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people, contributed the £18,000 towards the colourful playground.

The play area, which consists of low-level climbing equipment, balance beams and shaded areas, was opened yesterday (Thursday), by Tim Stimpson, a Rugby Union player, Headteacher, Gill Williamson, said: “It is really lovely, with bright colours and lots of interesting things to do.

“When we had our new sports hall built, the children were not able to use the playground for about a year. After that it remained empty and our last Ofsted report stated the only action plan we had, was to make the outdoor play area more interesting.

“Now I am pleased to say we have met that action plan.

“The equipment really has made the playground more stimulating, it has lifted the entire area and made it a much nicer play space.”

Breakspeare School, in Gallows Hill Lane, has 64 pupils with severe learning difficulties.

The new playground will be used to develop play skills, health and fitness and will give pupils the opportunity to learn about personal safety.

Some pupils with severe physical and sensory difficulties need to be protected from the elements, and the covered play area allows these children to play in safety.
