Boys sleep rough to raise charity cash

Hardy pupils from Haberdashers’ Boys’ School braved the biting winter cold last week and spent the night sleeping rough for charity.

The boys, who were raising money for the Wings of Hope charity, spent last Monday night in cardboard boxes at the Batchworth Lane tennis courts.

Supported by volunteers from Hertfordshire Police, the six boys, who all live locally, raised hundreds of pounds in sponsorship money – money that will help educate needy children in India and Africa.

District councillor Kemal Butt said: “I congratulate these boys on their commitment and dedication towards improving the lives of those less fortunate than them.

“What was really heart warming was that the residents of the surrounding houses also came and gave them lots of encouragement and food in true local spirit.”

Surely this was done to make the boys feel better rather than any real empathy for the homeless. Laughable that the locals rushed to give them food. Would they do that for the real homeless. I doubt it.

I have to agree. These stunts are simply posturing, patronising, naive nonsense which, as you rightly say, may have made the lads feel better about themselves but the money raised will be a tiny drop in the ocean when it comes to actually achieving anything.

What we have here is a classic case of middle-class people patting themselves on the back and massaging their consciences by telling themselves they are doing good. If folks really want to help the starving and homeless of the Third World at Christmas, why don't they just send a cheque to one of the numerous charities that specialise in the field? But, of course, that wouldn't get them into the media, would it?

Or am I just being an old cynic again?

Kind of ironic that they are using a homeless theme to feed starving Africans.Surely they should be raising money for the homeless if they are milking the sympathy.I dont thing Sir Bob would have done so well if hed said feed the world and then handed the dosh over to say the WWF.
They are all total hypocrits who want to seem to give a sh1t but really dont and their only experience of a rough night is what they bring home on a weekend....
Like Roy says,if you are a charity raiser and mean it,you dont shout it from the rooftops and call the press to say look how clever and good we are.....you just do it and feel good about it,period. The only time their parents would ever dream of putting their own hand in their pockets would only be to earn a tax break.....

i would jus like to say that these strapping young lads look like they have done an excellent job. I only wish I could have donated to this noble cause. Gaining police support was also an extremely sensible thing to do. I commend you guys, the world needs more people of this calibre.
