Watford MP Claire Ward calls for stricter sentencing for dangerous drivers

Watford MP Claire Ward has spoken out in favour of tougher sentences for dangerous drivers who kill or seriously injure other people.

The Justice Minister said she had “no doubt” in supporting harsher penalties after seeing for herself the “devastating impact” dangerous drivers can have on the families and friends of its victims.

She said: "An average of seven people a day are killed by dangerous drivers who also injure and maim thousands of people every year.

“It really is a serious issue for the Government and over the years we have done what we can to try and reduce these type of accidents. But obviously a two-year maximum sentence is not a sufficient deterrent."

In a BBC Radio 4 interview on Christmas Eve, Miss Ward, who will seek a fourth term as Watford MP at the General Election this year, outlined plans to increase the maximum sentence to five years through new legislation.

She said she had been convinced of the need for a tougher approach after meeting the family of Cerys Edwards, a one-year-old toddler who suffered brain damage and permanent disability after a three car crash in the Midlands earlier this year.

The young driver responsible had only recently passed his test and had been driving at more than 70mph. He was jailed for 21 months.

Ms Ward said: "The family impressed upon me that the two year maximum for someone who causes very serious injury just isn't sufficient. There is a big gap with the maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving which we increased over the last few years from ten to 14 years.

“Given that there could be potentially a lot more cases of serious injury because of better medical treatment and safer cars - this is something that we as a Government needed to address. We want to try and reduce the number of these accidents by making it clear that dangerous driving is just not acceptable on our roads."

  • Graham Eardley, a former Conservative councillor in Walsall, has been named the UKIP prospective parliamentary candidate for Watford. He took more than 1,000 votes when he stood in the Aldridge-Brownhills constituency in 2005.

He will face incumbent Ms Ward, alongside Tory hopeful Richard Harrington, Liberal Democrat Sal Brinton, and The Green Party's candidate Ian Brandon.

Cant understand why this type of driver is not caught by the proliferation of speed cameras that this Government has inflicted on the motorist - oops forgot they are for making money not catching maniac drivers!
Longer sentences are not a deterrent or an answer but more thought about raising the age limit, restricting inexperienced drivers to when, where, how fast and what type of car that they can drive might be a start. Also more use of ANPR cameras in Police cars catching the unlawful drivers would help the situation.
Unfortunatly these arguments have been around for some time now, pity Ms. Ward did not do more sooner - oops there I go again forgot there is an election coming soon!!

You have a rather odd nom de plume! Enlightened means give understanding to,which you obviously do not have. I suggest you change your name to nondescript.

The problem is that the most offences have a wide range of punishment. The maximum penalty may be considerable and what most would think was appropriate, it is the fact that most offenders get much less. It is therefore the minimum that needs to be reviewed.

She didn't have much to Say when 'Lord' Ahmed got away with a slap on the wrist for killing someone whilst using his mobile phone and driving.

Just shut up, Claire, and pack your bags. You're finished.
Your time would be better spent washing the nets on your Woodford Rd. 'home'....it's an eyesore!

The snout-in-the-trough Ward and her opposing Friend of Israel Tory are a disgrace to our town. Is there anyone else we can vote for?
