LGBT History Month in Watford hailed a success

Events across Watford to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month have been hailed a success.

Organisations from the town, including Hertfordshire Libraries and Watford Women's Centre, joined Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill at the Guideposts Trust, in Estcourt Road, yesterday, for a 'debrief' about the programme held throughout February.

During that month, Tony Fenwick, the co-founder founder of LGBT History Month, spoke at Watford Museum. There was also a quiz night at the Guideposts centre, an art group and a Valentine's Day party attended by more than 60 people.

Lin Fellows, a mental health worker at the Guideposts Trust, said there were now plans to start a support group for gay men, following the success of a similar women's group names LezGo.

She said: “We want to help LGBT people. We also want to help to inform the general public that LGBT people exist and have always existed in all parts of history and cultures. This is not a 20th century fad. It's something that's always been there.

“We have to celebrate the fact we're all different and there are different types of people in the community.”

For more information about Guideposts, LGBT History Month or the LezGo group, which meets on the last Thursday of each month, telephone Lin on 01923 223554.

Yes, we have to accept that all people are different and other people's lives are different to ours and hold equal value. But why do we have to celebrate the differences of others? I never understood that.

Did the WO's Michael Pickard attend any of these events? Or is this story a press release which has been simply printed as seen?
Maybe his memory isn't as long as mine but I recall a WO reporter being refused admission some years ago. The reporter was a man and the Watford Women's Centre would not let him in. Hopefully things have moved on and we are all now more tolerant.

In defense of LGBT History Month and I know some of you will stop reading after that opening statement ! For those of you who are more able to listen to alternative views and compassionate towards others. ALL PEOPLE HAVE A HISTORY whether you like the minority group they are in or not! History is History and in essence it records all peoples of all cultures, skin colours, eras, tribes, religions and minorities. If you are in the majority; white, middle class, European and men you have a history and it's always been taught and represented. You are lucky, because some of us when we became conscious of our skin, gender, sexualit
y or religious background we found we were in the minority. What test did you pass to be in the majority? Are you to be commended for getting the prize of being in the majority? NO …....you COULD have as easily been me, or her or black, mentally ill or disabled. There but for the grace of god go YOU or I !!!!!!
So men don't get let in to the Women's Centre ? Well how many gentleman's clubs have there been, how many universities have not allowed women, how many organizations, occupations, golf clubs and jockey clubs for YEARS have not allowed women? No women clergy,no women popes, no women politicians and even no votes for women until historically recently? Even parliament now has a tiny number of women MP's in relation to a population that has a MAJORITY of women? The world has more women than men!!! In that World men abuse women, beat up wives, partners and family members so that's WHY we have safe places for women to go! For refuge from those who might hurt them?
So well done to any organization who recognizes minorities of ALL sorts. We didn't earn our gender, sexuality, culture, physical or mental health wellness. We all pay taxes { even those who are in minority groups} so let's have our History recognized as others do in our society. By the way, we CANNOT promote our sexuality, gender or culture etc., unless by talking we can make you gay, African, female, mentally ill or disabled? You majority celebrate your straightness, heterosexuality and maleness in every festival, drama, book and recorded history. The media is saturated by majority reporting.
Well done Watford Observer for being open to diversity and equality for all and reporting without prejudice.
