Antiques Roadshow experts visited Chorleywood last Friday

Experts from the Antiques Roadshow visited Chorleywood last Friday, to inspect a capacity crowd's priceless treasures.

Judith Miller and Mark Hill from the BBC programme, valued antiques at the Memorial Hall, Chorleywood.

Ms Miller said: “Lots of people turned up at the Memorial Hall and most everyone came with something to be valued, which meant Mark and I did not finish until after 10pm.

“Among the items brought in, were a mid 19th Century waxed head doll, in its original clothes, worth about £800 a Kammer and Reinhardt Bisque head doll, also from the 19th Century, which would fetch close to £800 at retail, but near half that at auction.

“Someone else brought in a mid 19th Century micro mosaic of St Peter's in Rome. It was in a Malecite frame and was probably purchased on the Grand Tour and would today be worth £1,500.”

The pair are co-authors of Millers Antiques and Collectables Guide, and Mr Hill is presenting a new antiques programme called Cracking Antiques.

Sheryl Shurville, co-owner of the bookshop, said: “I'm hoping to repeat the evening because it went really well. People came along with all their treasures and a lot of them were pleasantly surprised.

“Judith and Mark are both so knowledgeable, they'd had not preparation at all and had all of these different items presented to them.”

Upcoming events organise by the bookshop include appearances from authors Jodi Picoult on April 30 and Gervase Phinn on May 25, and a Gryff Rhys Jones signing on May 11.
