The BBC comes to Rickmansworth School for their annual School Report Day

A dozen pupils from Rickmansworth School learned how to film and edit professional quality news reports, with the help of a BBC camera man.

More than 25,000 students from 7,000 schools in the country take part in BBC's annual School Report Day, and they each have to pick a final team of reporters.

The students from Rickmansworth were the overall school winners in a four-month selection project in citizenship classes.

In total, 180 groups of 12 and 13-year-olds explored the world of journalism and news broadcasting, which was whittled down to the lucky 12.

A BBC camera man came in on a number of occasions to show the team how to film, interview and edit, and then supervise them on their final report.

Stories which the news team covered included the school's fundraising efforts for Haiti survivors, a safety awareness campaign for users of Facebook and a multi-sports event for children with disabilities.

Patrick Whibley, teacher and organiser of the event, said: “The event aims to develop key skills such as responsible research, collaborative working and advocacy, as well as giving pupils a taste of an exciting career towards which some are hopefully enticed.

“It's important for the pupils to be interested in their local communities, and interview people in positions of authority to understand the workings of those communities.

“Too many things in citizenship are hypothetical, the students would much rather be doing something hands on than filling out work sheets.”
