Quiz masters from The Three Crowns Pub, Bushey, give children in hospital an answer to boredom

Charitable quiz masters from a pub in Bushey have donated a large sum to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

Members of the Three Crowns' Tuesday night pub quiz raised £5,138 over the past year and a giant cheque was presented to a hospital representative at last week's quiz.

The cash will be used to buy DVD’s and players, televisions and laptops for the children who have undergone spinal surgery on the Coxen Ward at the hospital.

Matron Siobhan Lalor McTague, who accepted the cheque, said: “A child who has undergone spinal surgery and has to stay in bed lying flat out will be able to do something more stimulating.

"Just imagine the effect on their morale when a child is able to communicate with friends and receive messages of support through Facebook.”

There was a full house on the night to see the donation handed over and landlord Michael Duffy paid tribute to the generosity of his regulars.

He said: “They are a kind-hearted and generous bunch who have helped raise over £15,000 for children’s charities over the last four years.

“None of this would have been possible without the work put in by our Quizmasters Steve O'Kane, Chris Bull and Phil Cameron who have given their time and expertise freely over the years.”

It is hoped the new equipment will help form a connection to home for those on the ward and a support network of friends and family.

Mr O'Kane added “The quiz costs £3 to enter, of which half goes straight into our charity fund and half goes to the winning team, though I reckon that 90 per cent of the time the winning team donates their winnings to the fund.”
