First roses planted in Bushey Rose Garden

Bushey Rose Garden moved one step closer to completion yesterday as the first batch of shrubs were planted.

Friends of Bushey Rose Garden, staff from Bushey Museum, officers and councillors joined contractors on the site to witness the moment which one council spokeswoman described as “historic”.

Conservative councillor Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for the environment, said: "It has taken a long time to get to this point but we are all very excited about the roses going in.

“There is a massive programme of planting to go ahead which will totally transform the beauty of the garden and create something magical for the community to enjoy for years to come."

Work to restore Bushey Rose Garden has been ongoing since funding was secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund.

Together with money from Hertsmere Borough Council, the £1.5m project has seen the garden completely stripped back in order to restore it to its former glory.

Planted around the fountain yesterday were David Austen "Heritage" pale pink roses and white "Glamis Castle", though the flowers may not bloom for a number of weeks.

Approximately 500 roses will be planted in the garden in total.

Whilst I'm sure the finished job will look very nice & be pleasant for people to use, I'm not 100% convinced that the £1.5M couldn't have been put to better use to directly help needy people?

Anybody else care to comment on this?

My main concern is not the money spent on restoring the vandalised garden. My main concern is the fear that it will simply be destroyed again by mindless locals who have no pride in Bushey.

Tricky one this. I avoided saying "youths", but I suspect any destruction will be carried out by younger inhabitants and their visiting friends.

Continuing security will be a greater expense in the long run. Sad.
