Champion athlete motivates West Herts College students

Students at West Herts College were inspired to go for gold following a motivational talk from former world athletics champion Derek Redmond.

Derek won gold in the 400metres at world, European and commonwealth championships and was part of the winning 400m relay team, along with Roger Black, John Regis and Kris Akabusi, at the 1991 World Championships.

During his speech to second year Business students, at the Hempstead Road college on Tuesday, March 9, he revealed some of the secrets to his success.

He said: “If you don’t take anything else from today take away the importance of self belief. You need to have the commitment and motivation to want to succeed, but if you don’t believe in yourself then why will anyone else?

“When I first became world champion I couldn’t believe it, but looking back on it now I can see how we won gold. Of course, we were all fit and at the height of our careers but there’s no way we would have come first without working together as a team, having self belief and belief in each other and actually wanting to win. That day I wanted to be world champion, I’d had enough of winning silver, I wanted the gold medal and believed that’s what I could achieve.”
