Pupils from Knutsford School open new Tesco Express supermarket in north Watford

Pupils collected £500 for their school at the opening of a new supermarket in north Watford.

Children from Knutsford Primary School, in Knutsford Avenue, were invited to cut the ribbon and officially open the new branch of Tesco Express, in St Albans Road, on Friday.

And store manager Eric Mensah was on hand to present them with a cheque, as part of Tesco's pledge to help the local community.

Ray Randall, headteacher at Knutsford, said: “We are delighted that the school has benefited from the opening of the new store and would like to thank Tesco for the kind donation.

“The money will be used towards providing expert speakers for themed assemblies to add to the learning and enjoyment of our pupils.”

Eric added: “We are all really pleased to support Knutsford School and so glad that pupils came to launch the new store and join in the celebrations with us. My staff and I are really enjoying welcoming our customers into the new store and we hope that Tesco will become a key part of the local community.”

There are community shops on the St Albans Road already. But will they still all be there by Christmas 2010?

£500 for cheap publicity, well done!

They should have (& could have) paid many times more than this.

Tesco have just won the right to open up in CG. Some residents about 500 out of 11.000 objected, yet when it's open, will they boycott it. I believe that all of those who signed a prtition against it should have to send in their photo, so that they can be banned. if they within their trade benefit from the building of the store, will they decline the money?

Nice idea, but your calculation has the fallacy that "those who are not against us are for us". No doubt many of the 11K people who shop locally, will face the closure of their favoured independent when CG gets a Tesco. That's my sad analysis for N Watford.
