Watford restaurant and cafe hygiene scores revealed

With Valentine's Day approaching quickly, reservations for tables in Watford's restaurants will be filling up with couples and would-be lovers on first dates.

Thanks to a rating system used by councils across the country, customers can get a look behind the scenes and see which outlets are up to scratch when it comes how hygienic the kitchen is.

Watford Borough Council's Environmental Health Officers inspect food businesses every one to three years.

As well as checking standards they also provide the “scores on the doors” scheme, which ranks the business out of five, and is displayed on the door and on a website.

The rating is based on three areas, including hygiene, the building itself and the competency of the management. They range from the “excellent” five stars, to the “poor” no star rating.

In Watford, 18 restaurants and cafes have been given no stars for poor standards and examples of “major non-compliance” with food hygiene.

However, more than 80 have been given five stars, which is the rating given to food establishments which have gone above and beyond the standards set by the council.

Richard Brown, from the council's environmental health team, said: “We look at things like whether they are cooking things properly, if they're keeping things cool in storage and cleaning things properly, and person hygiene too.

“We also look at the building, at drainage, whether it's pest proof and clean, and also whether the management is competent.

“Four star is fully compliment with the law, but to be five star the business must include some good practices as well.

“The businesses at the lower end would need more attention.”

The Food Standards Agency is currently working towards making a nation version of the scheme, which Watford will join, early in April.

Not that it’s not good to know where to eat, based on the quality of the hygiene standards but this list is seriously out of date and I would question why anyone would want to eat at Ann Summers unless you are look to dine out on a chocolate wily. I also don’t recall ever wanting to go into Abell Chemist for a pie and chips. It does not give me confidence to book based on the data provided.

Interesting that Beavers gets a better score than the fish monger and butcher in the market. Generally big chains seem to score far higher than independent traders.

Fab scheme - this information should not be hidden. It's essential for the consumer to see these scores, whether eating in a restaurant, using a fast food outlet or eating in their own staff canteen. Who would want to eat food prepared in a zero rated kitchen (or one/two rated for that matter)? Nobody is the answer! It also gives businesses the opportunity to improve their standards, where necessary, which in turn will increase sales. A win-win situation!

Seems to be a pattern to the lowest scores?

Looking at the pdf, I see the Royal Mail staff canteen in Ascot Road gets 4 stars. Didn't know that was open to the public.

The whole thing is surely preposterous nonsense. I can't think of anywhere in Watford I would choose to eat or take someone to dinner unless I or they were starving to death.

Comparing scores where there is time period of 9 years covered between some of them! How pointless!

'Sigh'
Anywhere that serves or sells food has to register with their local enviromental health department. This includes schools, work place restaurants/cafes and any shops that sell any type of food (including chocolate bars!)
There are strict guidelines about how food should be kept - ie meat refridgerated at a certain temp - and not dripping onto any other type food, basic hygiene etc - it is concerning that there are places with 1 or even 0 stars - I would have thought they would need to be closed and have to improve before they are rechecked. I personally would steer clear from anywhere less than a 3 star at the very least!
