'Appalling' assault on woman aged 87

A hooded teenager is being hunted by police after an 87-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed in Rickmansworth.

Police have revealed that the woman was attacked near the Harefield Road branch of Tesco, at the junction with Frog Moor Lane, at about 8.15am on Saturday, May 3.

The fresh-faced youth, described as white, slim, in his mid-teens, and about 5ft 3ins tall, pushed the woman to the ground as he stole her purse.

He then ran away towards the Aquadrome.

His victim was left shaken and suffered minor injuries.

Detective Sergeant Iain Jenkins said: "This is a particularly appalling offence where a young man has targeted a vulnerable elderly woman.

"He only gained a small amount of cash from her as she was going to buy her weekly shopping.

"I appeal to the residents to contact me if they witnessed anybody suspicious in the area. It is very unusual for a crime of this nature to be committed in this location.

"I would specifically ask any members of the public who may have been shopping in Tesco early on Saturday morning to report any information that may help solve this crime."

DS Jenkins can be contacted on 01923 472043, citing crime reference number C2/08/1419.

Alternatively you can telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. You do not have to give your name and you could be entitled to a cash reward.
