Anyone for golf?

Up to 76,000 people were mistakenly invited to spend a day relaxing at a spa and playing golf at an exclusive hotel in Watford.

Virgin Trains sent an email inviting recipients to be pampered at The Grove Hotel, in Hempstead Road, on May 28.

The company had intended to invite 75 members of its first class Traveller club but the email, titled 'Now really cancel everything', was accidentally sent to "quite a large number of people", according to a representative.

A second email later apologised for the mistake but offered customers the chance to win a ticket to the event.

The original was said to be a test sent out in error by the company's IT department.

It read: "We realise that we might have got you all excited about the prospect of a day at The Grove, and would like to offer you the chance to win one of three places at this event."

A representative said: "This was a genuine mistake. We think it should have been reasonably obvious but we acted quickly to apologise. Part of that apology is the draw to win tickets to the event."

Another example of incompetence involving sensitive client data.

It really beggars belief.
