A TOY library in Three Rivers has been granted charitable status.

Rickmansworth Toy Library, located at the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) Project Centre in Bury Lane, was originally established by the WRVS, with funding from Three Rivers District Council and Children In Need. It has now been made an independent charity, with funding from the WRVS for its first year.

Chairman Christine Guthrie said: "We are delighted that we will be able to continue the Rickmansworth Toy Library service. Besides being a valued source of toys, we are also seen as a place for children and their carers to meet with others and to try toys before hiring them."

The library, which is open twice a month, is run by volunteers. It stocks more than 250 toys for children from birth to eight years old, including toys for children with special needs. The average fortnightly hire rate for items is 50 pence.

More than 250 members have joined since its foundation in 1997 and an annual membership costs £3.
