Anger as recycled waste is 'trashed'
Amy Daws feels she has been let down after a decade of tireless recycling.
Amy Daws feels she has been let down after a decade of tireless recycling.

A woman from Chorleywood has spoken of her anger after council recycling collectors dumped her carefully sorted plastic, glass and cardboard into her own rubbish bin.

Mother-of-two Amy Daws, of Solesbridge Lane, says her au pair watched on Tuesday morning as Three Rivers District Council staff emptied her recycling containers into a large black sack before throwing it into her main, landfill-bound bin.

A keen environmentalist who has been recycling for more than ten years, Mrs Daws says the incident has dented her faith in the council's commitment to recycling.

She said: "I just could not believe it when I found out.

"To think we all spend so long washing out our little plastic pots and cans and they go and do this.

"We are all busy people with better things to be doing than sorting through our rubbish.

"I am happy to do it because I care about the environment.

"But if they are just going to throw it out with the rest of the rubbish then, frankly, I think we have a right to know."

Three Rivers District Council say the normal vehicle used to collect recycling in the area had broken down, forcing its workers to collect it in a smaller van before sorting it later at its Rickmansworth depot.

Mrs Daws, however, says her recycling was found stuffed into her landfill bin, hidden beneath other rubbish, and was clearly not going to be sorted.

She is now demanding an explanation from councillors.

Three Rivers District Council, which boasts one of the best recycling records in the UK, said it was investigating the complaint.

A coimcil spokemans said: "Residents can rest-assured that Three Rivers District Council recycles all eligible material residents' collect in their brown bins and kerbside recycling containers."

Environmental protection manager Alison Page said: "We are proud to have the highest recycling rate in Hertfordshire, currently at over 47 per cent.

"We are keen to increase this recycling rate to 50 per cent this year and therefore ensure that all eligible material is recycled."

Mrs Daws added: "This is a real slap in the face to all local residents who care about the environment and take the time and effort to recycle their household waste in the mistaken belief that the council would be diligently fulfilling their role.

"One has to wonder how many other short-cuts they're taking behind the scenes.

"If they are going to throw it all away I'd rather they just told us in the first place.

"That way we wouldn't be wasting our time.

"But what really annoys me is that I will have to wait two weeks for it to be collected again."

Now there is a another great alternative solution to recycling it is called "BIOPLAST Biodegradable Plastics"

Bioplast is a manufacturing company of BIOPLAST Branded Biodegradable Garbage Bags for the household markets and for the industry as well as Biodegradable Carrier Bags for the retail sector using their own patented unique formula of bacteria enzyme base substrate as against starch base as used by other manufacturers world over which has a cost addition of 300%-400%.

This is the only biotechnology in the world using bacteria enzyme base substrate which is 100% biodegradable within 6 months after disposal as per ASTM and EN/ISO standards with the lowest cost addition of 15%-20%.

Bioplast biodegradable products are also compostable and non-toxic, hence enhancing the nutritive value of the remaining soil.

We believe that this great innovation will go a long way in preserving the ecological balance around the world which has brought intelligent and affordable solution to the disposal of polyethylene plastic waste problem worldwide.

I think that fence needs a bit of loving care - If not treated it could rot away. I expect better from chorleywood.
