Plans by Hertfordshire County Council to close the Wiggenhall Road household waste recycling centre in Watford by October are under renewed fire.
Liberal Democrat county councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst for Central Watford and Oxhey and chair of the Environment Scrutiny Committee at County Hall has called a special meeting of the committee to review the proposal from the Conservative administration..
In an unusual move Councillor Giles-Medhurst used an obscure council standing order to call a meeting of the committee before May 19 to scrutinise the decision to close the Wiggenhall Road site, and one in Tring, and allow local residents to present their views on the closure plans.

The move is even more unusual in that the Conservative run county council is abolishing its four service scrutiny committees, including Environment, at its annual council meeting on May 22. They are all chaired by opposition members.
He said: "I objected to the proposal at the Waste Panel on March 4 when it was clear that not all the issues , especially the extra journey time and additional carbon emission that would be generated by 10 plus mile round trips to Waterdale in Bricket Wood or Rickmansworth sites had not been considered.
"The same was the case with the Tring closure - long journeys to Berkhamstead.
"Now with thousands of residents signing petitions against the closure of these two sites it even more important that this decision its looked at again and carefully and all views taken into account.
"This will give a chance for lead petitioners and the local councils in Watford and Three Rivers to present their views".
A date has not yet been fixed but it will be between May 1 and May 19.
