YEARS ago when the small cottages were demolished in Wells yard our firm excavated and laid storm water pipes and concreted over Wells yard which was at the back of the restaurant.

The manager used to let us into a section of the kitchen (there was just three of us) and get a subsidised meal. Swans used to back onto Wells yard as well.

One late afternoon (in winter), we were just going to pack up work, because it was getting dark, when the whole sky lit up. We didn't know what it was but carried on the work.

We found out afterwards that a construction worker in Rickmansworth had struck a large cable, and set the sub station at new Vicarage Road off.

It was like a giant fireworks display. One of our other gangs were working there and they thought the end of the world had come. They all ran up the road, but didn't know where they were going to.
