FOLLOWING a question about a shop in Watford called Buttery and and Baines, Irene Broadhead, of Watford, wrote in.
She explains that it was mainly a butcher's shop although it also sold some dairy products. She recalls that it was situated in The Parade, near to the former Clements and Sainsbury's shops.
She writes: "In those days it was all counter service with that personal touch in Sainsbury's, the staff were always immaculately dressed in their pure white, freshly laundered overalls.
"The staff serving on the cooked meats counter wore those white starched hats chefs wear. Sadly all that has gone with progress."
Another reader who failed to put their name on their letter recalls that Buttery and Baines was next door to Sainsbury's and the stock included rabbits and table birds. The rabbits were hung up on a high rail and metal cups were used to catch blood drips.
Do any other readers have recollections of shopping or working at Buttery and and Baines?
Do any readers have any pictures of this, or any other shops from The Parade they would like to share?
