FOLLOWING a recent question about Buttery and Baines, a butcher's shop in Watford High Street, Vera Levinson, of Oxhey, contacted the Nostalgia Hotline.
She recalls that the shop was originally located close to the junction with Clarendon Road and was run by Mr Buttery and his son, Jack. Mr Baines was a partner in the business.
She explained the shop moved to a site in the High Street near the pond, close to the Gaumont Cinema and opposite the old fire station.
Vera commented: "In pre-war times we had a nice lot of independent shops in the High Street. They were all so different then."
Does anyone have any memories of favourite shops in Watford and surrounding towns which they would like to share?
