FOLLOWING a recent feature on Grillo's ice cream, Mrs P Lear, of Watford, wrote in: "I remember buying my half-penny cornet from Jack Grillo's ice cream cart.
Without a doubt, to this day, it is the best ice cream I have tasted.
"Besides the Grillo's and Cerasales, there was another Italian ice cream maker in Watford, a Mr Mazzone. His ices were creamier in colour but still delicious. For two pence you could sit in a deck chair and listen to the band concerts at the bandstand in Cassiobury Park. Various military bands and the Watford Silver Prize Band entertained us.
"If it was raining the concerts were held in the Town Hall, I remember hearing the Central Band of the Royal Air Force there. It was a real treat."
