A picture of a band playing on the touchline at Vicarage Road and another of The Rioteers published in a printed edition of the Watford Observer in July prompted Christine MacMillan, of Wendover, Bucks, to get in touch by e-mail.

She writes: "What memories came flashing back. The band were Knox and the Knightriders, four lads, all from Bushey and in the sixth form at the Boys Grammar School. The occassion was half time during a match against Queens Park Rangers, possibly in April 1964.

"From left to right there is Phil Barton on rhythm guitar, now running a pancake house in Adelaide, Australia, Ian Carnochan, alias Knox, on lead guitar, still rocking and at present touring America and occasionally seen on our TV screens. Hidden from sight on the picture but playing drums is Rick Williams, and on the extreme left playing bass is Ian MacMillan. Both Rick and Ian are still practising Chartered Surveyors, Rick in London and Ian in Buckinghamshire.

"The group played extensively around the area and had a huge following, including me a young groupie', who went on to marry Ian MacMillan some 37 years ago. Their trade mark was black shirts and occasional hoods which, in those days, caused quite a commotion.

"On one occassion during a competition at the Town Hall to find the best local group in Hertforsdshire, the audience went wild when Graham Nash from the Hollies anounced the winners were The Zombies from St Albans.

A riot broke out and all that could be heard was we want Knox'. However, I guess Mr Nash was right, as the Zombies went on to have a top ten hit. But it was all good harmless fun at the time.

"The picture of the Rioteers links in nicely. They were a group from Abbotts Langley and second from the right is Nigel Eastham, who origionally played with Knox's group being replaced by Phil Barton when Nigel changed allegiance and joined Andy Canon of the Rioteers.

"It was lovely to reminise and at last my husband has gained a little street cred, as far as his four children are concerned. Those were indeed for us the good old days'."

A picture of The Rioteers was also carried on these pages in July and Yvonne J Davison wrote in: "I recognise the drummer in The Rioteers as Richard Holdom, he is my friend Janet's brother who played in the band at her wedding in 1963.

"Richard played in other gigs, he thinks one being called Loose End.

"The others in the group are Nigel Eastham, Neil Reynolds, Colin Strange and Andy Cannon."
