Photographs of bomb damage reproduced in The Book of Watford by Bob Nunn prompted Mr R L Walker, of Cassiobury Park Avenue, to write in with a request for information.
Mr Walker is hunting for details about a bombing raid which took place on October 31, 1940, in which a house in Cassiobury Park Avenue was wrecked.
With the help of the Watford Reference Library, Mr Walker has located the picture, which was taken by Greville Studios, in the West Herts and Watford Observer of November 8, 1940, which reports: "Two women were extricated from this house (one after the rescue party had worked for five hours) and were only slightly injured, though suffering from shock."
Wartime reporting restrictions meant the date and location of the incident could not be recorded in contemporary news reports and, sadly, no records exist at the Watford Observer offices.
Mr Walker explains his interest: "I have reason to believe that our house suffered some external damage during the war and it could well be that the house opposite us was rebuilt after the war and it could well be that these facts are all related to the events of October 31, 1940."
