Last month, we republished an excellent poem which Barbara Murray from Lancashire had written in 1970 to celebrate Watford FC’s FA Cup win against Liverpool that year. The Hornets won 1-0 thanks to a spectacular diving header from Barry Endean.
One reader who has particular reason to remember that game is Ian Francis.
Ian wrote to Nostalgia: “Just a mention regarding the item about Watford’s win against Liverpool on February 27, 1970.
“My name is Ian Francis and I was right behind the goal when Barry scored the brilliant goal against Liverpool’s keeper, Lawrence.
“The reason I am writing in is because I have been disabled all my life, not as bad then as I was only slightly unsteady on my feet.
“Vicarage Road was packed to the hilt for the game, so as the final whistle went there was a big surge from the Rookery. As I went down a step I tripped over onto the ground.
“It was very terrifying. But no sooner had I touched the ground, than I was picked up and passed along above everyone’s heads and all the way out of the ground.
“I never had a chance to thank anyone so if you’re reading this now I THANK YOU. What makes it even more extraordinary is I was not a small child. I was 22 at the time.”
