I bet that pilot drinks Carling Black Label! Drivers in Abbots Langley had to queue in the sunshine as a slow moving jet plane, perched at a precarious angle, made its way to Leavesden aerodrome on Wednesday [May 2, 1990].

The Gnat jet has been bought by David Gilmour, guitarist and singer with rock group Pink Floyd and Bob Thompson, who runs RM Aviation based at the aerodrome.

As a former RAF pilot Mr Thompson used to fly Gnats and he and Mr Gilmour intend to strip down the plane, check every component and get the plane back in the air.

“David is a private pilot and can fly both fixed wing and rotary aircraft so we are both intending to fly it, although it will not be based at Leavesden,” said Mr Thompson.

The plane travelled from RAF Cosford at a steady 45 miles and hour on the back of a lorry with a police escort all the way.

Apart from a delay in getting a police escort near Luton, the journey was plane sailing until they reached the narrow streets of Abbots Langley.

The 17-feet wide load is pictured at the mini-roundabout near The Companion pub in Abbots Langley.
