Reader Mike Toll emailed Nostalgia with his memories of Oxhey Wood. Mr Toll, from Watford, said: “I left London in 1949 to live on the Oxhey estate.

“The estate wasn’t a bit like the Angel, Islington. It was mostly trees, fields, woods and golf courses. It was really an adventure play ground. I remember the woods were a mass of colour through most of the year, with bluebells and rhododendrons.

“People appreciated their new natural surroundings and there wasn’t a lot of vandalism.

“For quite a few years you could hear the workmen blasting the roots out, every day as they cleared the woods for more houses. There were very few finished roads and most of the pavements were cinder tracks.

“The council planted trees everywhere, lining most roads, a lot of which are still there.

“Hayling Road is a good example, about 20 of the original trees are still there.

“At the lower end of Northwick Road, there are some wonderful old trees that over the years have suffered every disease known to man.

“But the council resisted chopping them down and they still flower today. Sadly, it’s not only today’s young people who do the vandalising.

“The woods are being destroyed by the councils of the day and for no good reason. This must stop for the sake of the future generations.”
