Young people are Squidz in

THE artistic talents of young people were under the spotlight as part of a Millennium Youth Art Festival.

The fortnight-long celebration of diversity and artistry, held during November, was organised by Lewisham Councils arts department.

The various activities included captured the talents of children and teenagers in the borough.

Drama workshops for primary school students were held during the first week at the Dalmian Primary School, Grove Close, Forest Hill.

The Albany Theatre in Douglas Way, Deptford, was the central venue for the festival.

An exhibition of work by young people was held in the theatres reception area for the two weeks.

After a brief rehearsal of the Lewisham Our Town Story historical play at the Dome, the 50 youngsters put on their performance at the theatre on November 22.

The Squidz Club was a variety night where young people with learning disabilities were able to put their talents on show.

Punters got down to the funky music of guest DJs, bands and solo musicians.

The festival final day included free mask and head-dress-making workshops and a cabaret-style performance in the evening.

Festival co-ordinator, Kate Waterfield said: This is an excellent way for the council to focus on the talents of the young people in Lewisham.

It was a great success as children and teenagers from all walks of life got involved.
