A father and son from Watford won a national tennis title last weekend.

Lee and Patrick Evans from Tavistock Road in North Watford beat their Oxfordshire opponents in a hard fought final of the LTA’s National Family Championships, which were held in Dudley in the West Midlands.

Thirteen-year-old Watford Grammar schoolboy, Patrick, and former pupil Lee, who are long-time members of the town’s hidden jewel West Herts and Watford Lawn Tennis Club, had won through to the finals having kicked off the campaign with wins against other local father and son pairings as long ago as April.

The final was a highly competitive affair with no breaks of service until Lee and Patrick were leading the first set 5-4.

Having just held his own service game, Patrick in particular produced some fantastic hard-hitting tennis and it wasn’t long before the Watford pair had taken the game and with it the first set 6-4.

The second set was a similarly close affair until a break of service gave Lee a chance to serve for the title at 5-3.

The nerves were jangling, particularly on the sideline where wife and mother Lindsay and family friend Richard were watching nervously on, but the Watford pair finally came good on match point number six, mercifully avoiding a nervy third set.

That caused the sort of celebration that Dudley is never likely to witness again as a Watford scarf emerged and was held aloft by the jubilant players and their supporters.
