On Friday 8th May 2015 Cherry Tree Primary School celebrated VE day, following a week of learning about aspects of the war. Pupils and staff dressed up in 1940’s style clothes and shared their work in assembly. ‘I’ve really enjoyed writing diaries and learning about experiences from the war’ Logan in Yr 6 said. ‘It has helped me understand more about it.’ During the morning the children made bunting, hats out of newspaper and bread and jam sandwiches. The afternoon street party was amazing. The whole school sat at tables in the playground and ate their sandwiches. A Year 2 pupil said ‘There was a fantastic, community feeling with everyone together’. The children then played the hokey cokey and the whole school did the conga around the school field. The afternoon ended with a two minutes silence during which the children reflected on the sacrifice that so many people made during the war in order to protect our British right of freedom.
