Weekly bin collections could return in Hertsmere during sweltering summer

Residents in Hertsmere will see their fortnightly rubbish collection scheme scrapped, if temperatures rise above 30 degrees five days in a row.

As forecasters predict a sweltering summer is on its way, Hertsmere Borough Council is planning to help homeowners by returning to a weekly collection, albeit temporarily.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “Previously some people have felt it difficult to manage their waste in the summer so we hope that by having this plan ready we will be able to react to any issues."

However, as the council announced record recycling rates of 40.04 per cent in 2008/09, it said if the scheme is introduced, it will mean all rubbish is sent to landfill.

Therefore, if residents want to recycle their green waste, they should only leave out their black bins.

“We listened to what residents said last year and have come up with something with offers a realistic solution and one which allows people to make the choice themselves," added Councillor Heywood.

The plan will only be invoked if temperatures go above 30 degrees for five consecutive days, and residents will be notified of the changes with information on what to do hooked to their bins.

Speaking about the record recycling rate, Councillor Heywood said: "Thanks go to all residents who have been recycling their waste - they have helped to reduce the amount we send to landfill which is really important as sites are rapidly running out of space.

“Recycling rates do go up and down from time to time but this is something definitely worth celebrating - residents really are making a difference."
