6:45pm Sunday 28th June 2009
On Saturday the 27th of June 2009 I completed a 10 mile walk which started at midnight. Well, let’s just say that the beginning of the night wasn’t as we had hoped. Up until about 10:30pm a storm had begun and the skies poured over St. Albans.
This wasn’t a good start to what we had hoped was going to be a lovely warm evening for our 10 mile walk for women to raise money for Grove House Hospice.
The walk wasn’t due to start until 12.00am so our fingers remained tightly crossed. As me and my friend Christina Freestone and her mum Hazel Freestone arrived at Verulamium Park at around 10.45 the rain had stopped, luck was on our side.
As we sat down on the benches outside the Inn on the hill hundreds of women wearing pink accessories from head to toe, wigs, tutus, leg warmers gathered around us raring to start.
A few men had also come along for the walk but as the walk was for women they then had to dress as women, wearing dresses or skirts. As it came to around 11:50pm we were told to make our way to the starting line, the air was cold but the atmosphere of the ladies around kept everyone’s spirit high.
The walk then started at exactly midnight, the streets of St. Albans were covered in women of all ages all dressed in pink walking together to raise money for a good cause.
The support from the locals looking out their windows, cars, or restaurants kept us smiling. The walk was long and tiring, marshals along the way told us how far we had gone and how far we had left to go, I still don’t know if that was a good thing or bad, knowing how much further we had to walk. After about 7 miles we came to St Albans Fire Station, there they supplied us with Mr Kipling French Fancies, and fresh bananas as well as cold bottles of water handed out by the gorgeous fireman that provided us ladies with some eye candy for the evening.
At around 3.15am me, Christina and Hazel crawled through the finish line, we were ready for our beds. What a fantastic way to fundraise and have fun, join us next year!
