Had an email last week from Justin Webber, senior planner at the town hall, asking me – or rather you – for help.

He writes: “As you no doubt know, 2014 is the centenary of the start of World War I and Watford Borough Council has been working on ensuring the various war memorials across the borough are in good condition.

“Two of the memorials we have been involved with are the ones at Christ Church (St Albans Road) and High Road (Leavesden).”

He goes on to explain that the council has been unable to find out much about the history of these two memorials – the Christ Church one pictured left, and the Leavesden one above.

He asks: “Could you include a couple of questions along the lines of: Does anyone know anything about the history of the war memorial on High Road? And does anyone know anything about the history of the outdoor war memorial at Christ Church on St Albans Road?

“I have not been able to find any records of when either memorial was unveiled and we only have records of relatively recent work relating to the structures.

“There are restoration projects planned for both sites, but it would be helpful to know more about the history of both memorials.”

Well, I too have drawn a blank so it’s over to you. Does anyone have any information regarding the memorials? Perhaps you remember when they were unveiled or who paid for them?

If there was an unveiling ceremony, as such, perhaps you were there? Although that might seem a long shot, bearing in mind this is the centenary of the start of the war, most memorials to the fallen weren’t actually put up until the 1920s – in many cases the late 1920s – so I’m not without hope!

Please contact me via the link below and I’ll pass your information on.

Incidentally, we will, of course, be covering the centenary of the outbreak of World War I throughout the year. Information, details of special events and so on, are also very welcome.
