When Princess Anne came to Watford on Wednesday to attend a Royal Gala Charity Night at EMI Baileys, she played bingo and was given a demonstration disco dancing lesson.

The Princess was received by Major General Sir George Burns, Lord Lieutenant of the County, who introduced her to Watford’s Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Sam Deakin.

She was then introduced to the artistes giving their services for the cabaret, including Roger De Courcey from Bushey and his wife Cheryl.

A cheque for £8,132 was presented to her during the evening. Mr Peter Smith, managing director of EMI Dancing Ltd, announced the sum raised and a member of the Combined Charities Committee, and chairman for the evening Malka Tillman made the presentation.

Caller for the bingo game was Russell Harty, who was helped by resident compere George “Fuzzy” Saunders.

The occasion marked the 21st Royal Charity Show and the third charity event for the Princess organised by the Combined Charities Committee. The Princess’s favourite charities include the Save the Children Fund and Riding for the Disabled.
