Watford-born comedian Cyril Fletcher was the star attraction at St Michael’s Church autumn fair on Saturday.

The television and radio celebrity, who lived in Cassio Road as a child and attended Watford Grammar School for Boys for a short period, received a warm welcome from the large crowd which turned out to watch the opening of the fair held in aid of the church heating fund.

Gusts of hilarity spread through the audience when Mr Fletcher admitted sometimes the organisers asked the personality for 3pm, when it in fact opened at 2.30pm and he was then received by a large crowd of very annoyed people.

The comedian, whose uncle Mr J Ginger was borough treasurer of Watford for many years, told his listeners he had been christened at St Michael’s Church two years after it was built. “I was last here opening a sale 14 years ago,” said Mr Fletcher and joked: “It is a quick return of old favourites.”

The event, which started off with songs from the Chater Junior School choir, made a profit of £167.
