Two pictures have been sent to me in the past few weeks by readers anxious to discover the names of those pictured.

The first was brought into our offices by Gary Chilton, who lives in Welwyn Garden City.

Gary says the picture features his late mother Beryl Belsham second right, and is captioned: “Callowland Y.C. Netball, 1945, after match against Dutch sailors.” I’m guessing that “Y.C” stands for youth club, but more than that we don’t know. Beryl, who lived in Leggatts Way and Middle Way at various times, worked at the Peace Memorial Hospital as a medical secretary.

The second picture was sent to me by Mrs P. Day, who lives in Buckland Rise, Pinner.

Mrs Day writes: “Can anyone identify the couple getting married, or indeed anyone else, in this photo, taken in the Watford area during the First World War period?

“My husband’s mother, Mary Eliz. Day (née Gransby) is standing against the fence on the right hand side and George Henry Gransby is next to the bride, left hand side, in the second row. His wife, Emma E. Gransby née Carpenter, has a baby on her lap.”

So, over to you. Does anyone know who any of the others are? Please write and let us know. I’ll pass any information on.

It’s all rather a long time ago, we know that, but fingers crossed.

You may recall the picture of Santa at Watford FC that appeared in the Nostalgia column of December 12.

The man dressed as Santa, Rob, asked what happened to the others in the picture, which was taken in the mid 1970s and can be seen again here.

I received a letter from Jean Duggal of Brush Rise, Watford, who identified one of the crowd.

“The person third from right, front row, with a Beatles haircut would appear to be my cousin Bill Canning,” she wrote. “Sadly he is no longer with us.

“He died five years ago. At the time of the match, he was living on the Holywell estate.”
