Bells were ringing as Watford’s Mayor, Councillor William Everett, entered Watford Post Office on Wednesday morning to purchase the first sheet of experimental charity stamps which are to be on sale from post offices throughout the United Kingdom for the next month. But it was not planned as part of the ceremony.

It just so happened that trouble had developed in the Market Street Post Office alarm bell system and staff were awaiting the arrival of engineers to rectify the fault.

The stamp issue is part of a nationwide experiment from which it is hoped 11 charities will benefit.

The stamp, purchase of which is entirely voluntary, costs sixpence. Of this,4½p is the current price of sending a letter weighing up to 2oz by inland first class post.

The extra 1½p is a donation to charity.
