Nostalgia reader Elliott Smock is appealing for information about an RAF bomber that crashed in Bushey in 1943.

Mr Smock, from Tower Bridge Road, London, said: “I wonder if any of your readers recall the crash of an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber aeroplane in Bushey during World War Two?

“The aircraft belonged to 81 Operational Training Unit and was on a night training flight on September 2, 1943.

“While practicing evading searchlights, the aircraft went into a dive and broke up – crashing into the ground and sadly killing the entire crew of five.

“RAF records say the Whitley came down near the allotment in Finch Lane, damaging a tall oak tree.

“Other parts of the aircraft were found up to a mile away.

“Readers may be interested to know that no Whitley aircraft survived the war and we are rebuilding one for museum display.”

Is there any more information or photographs about this wartime crash?
