More telephone exchange memories

Recent contributions about working at Watford Telephone Exchange brought back memories for Pam Katona, née Tyler.

She said: “I also have fond memories of the Watford Telephone Exchange. I went to work there straight from school in 1956.

“I found the discipline quite difficult to cope with, however, I do value the life long friendships that have formed from my three years there.

“Friends who I still keep in touch with are Joyce Poynter, née Lee; Dora Rooke, née Hobbs (Canada); Pat Gravlin, née Piddington (California, USA); and Eileen Turnball, (Wales).

“To us ‘youngsters’ the supervisors were so old and past it, they must have been in at least their mid-30s. I especially remember Dot Wilson, Nella Guchi and ‘Googie’ Batty.

“Special friends of mine were Betty Gough, Peggy Doyle, Pat Dott and Sylvia Carpenter.

“Let’s have a reunion soon. Hopefully in the spring as I live in Florida and those English winters are hard to deal with.”
