Watford Observer: Patron outside the Leathersellers Arms which stood in Watford High Street. The Leathersellers Arms once stood in Watford High Street and it was in this photograph that Brian West spotted his uncle.

He wrote: “Regarding the photograph of group outside The Leathersellers Arms, I’m pretty certain the man seated, five from the right, in the middle of the front row is my uncle, Charles Beere, who lived in Chester Road before and after World War Two.

“The person seated in the front row, three from the right, I believe to be my father, Bertie West.

“As to a question about outdoor swimming in south-west Hertfordshire, my grandfather, Ephraim West, was the baths attendant at the pool under the Five Arches.

“This was located through the park alongside the river at the bottom of Water Lane. I think this closed sometime in the 1930s.

“I now live in Dorset but I have had a connection with Watford until recently through my season ticket for Watford Football Club. In 1934, I first saw Watford FC beat Charlton 2-0 and two weeks later Coventry 2-1.”
