Reader Pauline Castle, from Acme Road, Watford, wrote to Nostalgia with memories of Watford fire station and meeting stars of stage and screen.
She said: “I remember Watford fire station being situated near the top of the High Street, opposite the Gaumont Cinema. It was later moved and on the site Gade House was built which housed the Co-Op.
“At the time I worked at Watford Baby World situated a few doors away from the fire station. We used to store our prams in garages in Beechen Grove and had to walk through the town pushing a pram and pulling another behind us.
“On one of these trips my colleague and I met Kenneth Moore who was filming The 39 Steps at the Palace Theatre. He stopped to ask where we were going and gave us both a kiss on the hand.
“In the early 1970s, Norman Wisdom was filming at Callowland Junior School in Leavesden Road.
“We were watching out of a bedroom window when my daughter and her friend called out to Norman. There immediately came a signal from the crew for them to be quiet.
“My husband and I also helped with Operation Santa. It was organised by the late Geoff Harris, from Leavesden Road Baptist Church.
“Clements used to open one evening and people who would not normally get out were brought to the store by car and we were there to assist them with their purchases.
“Everyone volunteered their services for the evening.”
