Memories of entertainment for teenagers in Watford in the 1960s was the subject of an email from Julie Addison.

Mrs Addison, née Preston, said: “It all started around 1960 when a hall by Watford swimming baths was opened on Saturday or Sunday nights.

“I was about 14/15 at the time.

“A chap with a record player (the sort you could put eight records on at a time) ran the club and we danced all night to his music. Shortly after that several other places opened locally for teenagers that just wanted to get together and dance.

“My friends Josie, Rita, Judith and Maureen used to regularly meet up with other girls at these places.

“Monday nights it was Woodside Community Centre, no alcohol was allowed so hence never any trouble.

“Wednesday nights it was the Wednesday Beat Club held at the ex-servicemen’s club in Watford.

“Thursday’s dances were held at the Leavesden Hospital site to raise money for the patients. Friday’s it was Bury Lane club in Rickmansworth.

“Weekends were great too. Saturdays we all went to the Saturday Trade held at the Trade Union Hall near Watford Junction.

“We had live groups there every week.

“On Sundays, it was back again to the Trade Union Hall only this time it was called the Sunday Beat Club.

“I recall that the Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday clubs were run by some chap called Bernie Murphy and his friend who was called ‘Bimbo’.

“There was never any alcohol served at these places, although at half time you could go to the local pub.

“However, by the time you had got served and emptied your glass it was time to go back to the club because if you took longer than the break allowed you didn’t get back in. There was only one night a week, a Tuesday, that we couldn’t find anywhere to go.

“It was a wonderful way to spend our teenage years and I wonder if many other people have the fond memories of those times too.”
