Harlow resident Mrs A Adamson wrote to Nostalgia after reading about Haywards Wholesale Confectioners. She said: “I read with great interest the article ‘Sweet memories of Haywards Wholesale Confectioners’, because it mentioned Lonsdale School.

“The school was run by my mum’s aunty, Miss Bertha Annie Kempton. I remember my mum, Barbara Walker, saying that she helped out at the school.

“I have been doing some research into my family tree and was wondering if anyone has any information about the school and/or Carey Place.

“I was also wondering if anyone has any information about Messrs Kempton Bros. They ran a grocers shop in Watford High Street, on the corner of Queens Road.

“One of the brothers was my great grandfather, Thomas Tyerman Kempton. The shop was listed in Peacocks Directory of 1890.”
