Memories of Watford Market come from Mr G Wright, of Hagden Lane, Watford. He wrote: “I can just remember when Watford’s market was situated actually in the High Street (in the wide section between Church Place and Market Street).
“At dusk, the stalls were illuminated by hanging Tilley lanterns, which hissed in operation and gave a bright white light.
“At this time, there was also a separate cattle market, located just off Market Street and approached via Wellstones.
“Later, the main market moved to a large, roofed but open-sided area (now Charter Place/The Harlequin). This was probably ideal, because the roof kept the stalls and the shoppers dry, while the open sides ensured ample ventilation (think wet fish).”
