More memories of Watford restaurant Cookery Nook landed on the Nostalgia desk this week. Mrs H Robinson, of Juniper Grove, Watford, wrote: “I was interested to see the request in the Observer Nostalgia column for memories of Cookery Nook.
“My mother worked there from 1944 until 1953 when we moved to Letchworth. She made tea and toast from 2pm to 6pm Mondays to Saturdays. My aunt also was a cook there for several years.
“It was owned in those days by two sisters, the Miss Coopers. I believe their names were Peggy and Rosemary and one of them married a local photographer. There was a lady who did the washing up who as I recall was Miss Bennett.
“The cakes, which I think the sisters made, were always iced in very bright icing.
“We returned to live in Watford in 1982 and I discovered Cookery Nook was still there. I took my young daughter to see where her grandmother had worked and found it had hardly changed but was under new ownership.
“After its closure, I coincidentally became friendly with a niece of the last owner.”
