Where is Watford?

Watford is situated 16 miles northwest of London and has excellent communication links to the surrounding areas. It is a compact town, covering an area of 21 square kilometres. It also has rail links into London, and to the Midlands, the North-West and Scotland. These links make Watford a popular place for businesses and a regional centre for shopping and recreation. Although predominantly urban in nature, the town benefits from well-used green spaces, such as Cassiobury Park, as well as being close to other, more rural parts of the county. Although the town is very close to London, Watford is actually part of Hertfordshire and is one of ten district councils in the county. We are part of the East of England region, which also includes the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Watford is twinned with five towns in Europe and the USA. Town twinning is seen as a way to build relationships between nations and offers the opportunity to develop connections with areas that share similar characteristics. Watford’s town twinning stems back to 1956, when links were first made with Mainz in Germany. Over the next three decades, associations were developed with four other towns in France, Russia, the USA and Italy. Find out more about town twinning
