On your bike in Watford town centre (27 June 2007)

Watford residents and shoppers experienced the fun of trying out new modes of transport at the ‘Bike Watford’ event last Sunday (24 June). Despite the unseasonable weather there was a good turn out of people willing to try the range of modern utility bikes, plus a number of more exotic machines, on offer.

Organised by Watford Borough Council, Watford Town Centre Partnership and featuring the Company of Cyclists the event also included a range of stalls including ‘Dr Bike’, who diagnosed and treated attendees ‘ill’ bikes.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill, who attended the event said: “Regardless of the rain the Bike Watford event was a huge success. I really enjoyed trying out the bikes. The four person bike was quite fast and not what we would want to see up and down the High Street!!

“It was also heartening to see the number of people who signed up to Watford’s Cycle Code pledging to take care when they cycle through the Borough. They have all now received a Bike Watford bell that will make their journeys safer.”

Members of the public also took advantage of a series or rides organised by SPOKES, South West Herts cycling group that brought participants to the event via some of the many cycle paths and routes that cross the Borough.

One Watford, the town’s local strategic partnership, ran a grand prize draw quiz offering an adult or child’s bike or the equivalent value in cycling accessories in exchange for answering a few easy questions and been drawn out of the hat first. Over 70 people took part and the winner will be contacted shortly.
