ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners have branded Bromley Council's attempts to become green as "unambitious".

The angry reaction comes just weeks after the council proudly unveiled its new £200m waste contract, which it claimed would bring it into line with government regulations.

But Friends of the Earth (FOE) has slammed the efforts as lacking ambition and falling far short of its expectations.

FOE waste campaigner Karine Pellaumail said: "We are disappointed by Bromley's plan to incinerate 26 per cent of the waste while only recycling and composting 25 per cent by 2015. It is being unambitious about increasing recycling and composting. Bromley Council said it was on course to meet its statutory recycling/composting of 22 per cent in 2003.

"This means it only aims to increase from 22 per cent to 25 per cent from 2003 till 2015. This is in spite of its stated plan to provide doorstep recycling and composting collections within two years.

"Other areas providing quality recycling and composting, such as the London borough of Sutton, have already reached rates of about 50 per cent. Why can't Bromley follow their example."
