BROMLEY fire chiefs are urging people to fit smoke alarms as part of a London-wide initative.

The launch of London's New Fire Safety Campaign is designed to help prevent fire deaths and injuries.

It also aims to combat the many excuses people use for not buying and installing smoke alarms.

Every year, 57 people die and a further 1,168 are injured in London as a result of domestic fires. But one in five households still do not have a smoke alarm fitted.

Statitics show you are twice as likely to die in a fire if you do not have a working smoke alarm.

London Fire Brigade has joined forces with the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions to launch the campaign.

Orpington crew commander John Turner said: "There is no question smoke alarms save lives. If you do not have an alarm, you are far more likely to die in a house fire than if you have one fitted.

"If you possess an alarm, it is vital you ensure it is in proper working order by testing it once a month and changing the battery once a year."
