MORECAMBE Football Club’s long-standing President Jim Bowen has resigned - after fans labelled him a Blackburn Rovers supporter.
The TV comedian admitted on Granada TV’s ‘Soccer Stories’ that he was a Blackburn Rovers follower and was slammed on the Morecambe FC website message board by angry fans.
But the 66-year-old, pictured, who has held the honorary role at the club for 10 years, says: “ I’ve always been a Rovers fan but that’s not to say I wasn’t a Morecambe fan too.” Rod Taylor, chief executive of Morecambe FC, says the board has ‘reluctantly’ accepted Jim’s decision to resign.
“It was the club who asked Jim to be President and he’s always been available when we’ve needed him,” he told the Citizen.
“We would like to thank Jim for his hard work and he has said he will be happy to continue helping us in the future.” He adds that replacing Jim is not a matter of urgency for Morecambe as the new season has just got underway.
