WELLING has taken another step towards improving its town centre with the unveiling of a new town clock.

The clock is an exact replica of the Art Deco 1930s original, which was well-known in the town but fell into disrepair.

The unveiling was one of the last duties of outgoing Bexley mayor Councillor John Wilkinson.

Martin Smith, from Aye Gee Motorcycles and chairman of the Welling Town Centre Partnership, said: “It is really good to see this well-loved feature back in Welling.

“This is another small but important step in making Welling a welcoming town.”

It was the partnership's idea to replace the clock and it was paid for by the council and a contribution from Bexley Rotary Club. The partnership is working with Bexley on other improvements for the town.

Last year, Bexley put in new seats, litter bins and railings around Embassy Court, with the town's cannon logo.

The facelift of the town's library will be completed this year with floodlighting. The Bellegrove Road car park is also earmarked for improvements.
